The Complaints

The complaints in this case arose after the applicant reported to the police that her neighbours were making threats against her. An officer attended the applicant’s address and listened to several audio recordings that she had taken of the alleged incident. The officer was satisfied that there had been no criminality.

We have reviewed the handling of one complaint, namely that:

  1. An officer was rude to the applicant when he attended at her address.

Police Scotland's Decision

Police Scotland did not uphold the applicant’s complaint.

Our Findings

We have found that Police Scotland did not handle the applicant’s complaint to a reasonable standard.

Consequently, we have made one recommendation to address the shortcomings in Police Scotland’s handling of the complaint. In summary, we have recommended that Police Scotland conduct further enquiries, reassess the complaint and provides the applicant with a further response.

Our recommendation should be implemented by Police Scotland within two months of the date of this report.

Outcome

Police Scotland implemented one recommendation in this case. In doing so, Police Scotland conducted further enquiries, including obtaining further information from the applicant and the subject officer. Thereafter, Police Scotland provided the applicant with a well-reasoned response which clearly explained why her complaint remained not upheld.
