Report – Police Scotland – PIRC/00178/23
The Complaints
We have reviewed the handling of four complaints, namely that:
an officer was rude and dismissive towards the applicant when he reported events to the police;
an officer refused to give the applicant his ‘badge number’ when requested;
Police Scotland did not investigate the applicant’s reports of dangerous driving; and
Police Scotland failed to take the applicant’s reports of harassment seriously, with no action being taken.
Police Scotland’s Decision
Police Scotland did not uphold the applicant’s complaints.
Our Findings
We have found that Police Scotland handled complaints 1, 2 and 3 to a reasonable standard, but not so complaint 4.
Consequently, we have made a recommendation to address the shortcoming in Police Scotland’s handling of complaint 4. In summary, we recommend Police Scotland should conduct further enquiries into the complaint and provide the applicant with a further response.
We have also made a learning point about an aspect of the complaint enquiry.
Our recommendation and learning point should be completed by Police Scotland within two months of the date of this report.
