The Complaints
The complaints in this case arose following Police Scotland’s response to domestic abuse incidents and reports involving the applicant. We have reviewed the handling of five complaints, namely that:
- on 1 March 2020 the applicant was not shown empathy or given any support or guidance by the officers who arrested her;
- Police Scotland took no action when the applicant attended a police station to report domestic abuse by her ex-partner;
- the applicant was arrested for assaulting an individual despite there being no evidence;
- Police Scotland took no action when the applicant reported an individual for numerous domestic offences; and
- The applicant was never informed that the individual had not been arrested and only found this out when she contacted the police for an update.
Police Scotland’s Decision
Police Scotland did not uphold any of the applicant’s complaints.
Our Findings
We have found that Police Scotland handled all of the applicant’s complaints to a reasonable standard. We have not made any recommendations to Police Scotland but have identified a learning point relating to how the applicant’s complaints were initially assessed.
